Did you know? The hidden charms of Senjojiki!
NARU ISLAND’S CLASSIC SIGHTSEEING SPOT: SENJOJIKI
Hello. I’m Kanari, a SUP guide on Naru Island in my fourth year of living here. Today, I’d like to share the hidden charms of "Senjojiki," a place that even many locals may not know much about!
If you search for "Naru Island" online, Senjojiki is one of the top results. It is said that the name comes from the wide stretch of land in front of the small island, big enough to lay out a thousand tatami mats. Located on the east side of the island, it is a beloved place where many island residents gather on New Year’s Day to watch the first sunrise. The sunrise and Senjojiki together are truly beautiful ♡
The reason this Naru Island landmark is so popular is, above all, the striking contrast between the deep blue sea and the green of the small island. The water around Senjojiki is especially clear, and on a sunny day, the blue sea is breathtaking!! (It’s especially beautiful when viewed from the slope on the old road.)
SO WHAT IS THE HIDDEN CHARM OF THIS “CLASSIC” SPOT?
Now for the main topic. As someone who loves the sea around Naru Island as a SUP guide, this is the hidden charm of Senjojiki, one of the island’s classic sightseeing spots.
It’s the coral reef spread out under the sea!
“Coral? Like the kind you see in Okinawa?” Yes, that coral!!! It’s on Naru Island too!!! (Nearby Fukue Island has a history of thriving on coral fishing, which is why there is so much coral there.)
I’ve seen seas described as “spectacular” all over the world, including mainland Okinawa, its outlying islands, Egypt, and Africa, but the sea around Naru Island is just as beautiful.
Naru Island doesn’t have sandy beaches, but I personally think the water is remarkably clear.
To have such beautiful nature so close by, somewhere you can stop at before or after work, feels incredibly luxurious, and I felt it was one of the precious treasures the people of Naru Island have long protected.
A SEA WHERE CORAL LIVES
If coral can live there, the sea must be clean. Coral can’t survive in polluted water. There are also many kinds of fish around the coral. The photo shows a clownfish. (It seems that two white stripes means a clownfish, and three stripes means a false clown anemonefish.)
Both coral and clownfish seem to prefer warm seas, so the water around Naru Island must be fairly warm.
A sea that still holds on to beautiful nature. I hope we can leave it for the children of the future.
THE WATERS AROUND NARU ISLAND ARE WORTH A LOOK
What did you think? Doesn’t it make you want to visit Senjojiki this summer?
To be honest, I did want to keep this as my own little secret, but I really wanted everyone to know how wonderful Naru Island is, so I wrote this article.
Please experience Naru Island’s beautiful nature, while taking care not to damage the coral!
☆ ACCESS INFO ☆
Naru Senjojiki: about 10 minutes by car from Naru Port ・The best spot is to the left of the center path through Senjojiki.
I went snorkeling, but many people may be afraid of the sea... If that’s you, try using a "underwater box viewer"! At low tide, you can walk almost all the way to the point, then use a float ring to get to the spot and look into the sea with this device. Or, if you have a SUP or kayak, we recommend using that to get to the spot. Please enjoy the sea around Naru Island♪
